An Overview of the Roofing Industry

In order to understand the importance of hiring a roofing contractor who has been certified by the manufacturer, it might be helpful to have a quick overview of the roofing industry in Pennsylvania. This information can help you save thousands of dollars over the long run.

Your roof is the most important element protecting your house, but in most cases, it adds up to only 4% of the cost. The lowest bid is not always the best choice — here's why:

In Pennsylvania and several other states, there are no requirements at all to become a roofer. Anyone with a hammer and a nail gun can install your new roof.

There are building codes that regulate how roofs should be installed, but the sad truth is that there's often no way to tell if the code has been followed. The roof is already in place when the inspector visits, and many of the important parts are no longer visible and cannot be inspected.

Complaints about roofers make up over 70% of the complaints received by the Better Business Bureau. It falls on you, the homeowner, to protect your home and investment by making a wise choice about your roofing contractor.

An Overview of Manufacturer Certification

Several roofing material manufacturers have responded to these problems by developing certification programs for their products. The typical shingle manufacturer certification program requires a contractor to use three of the manufacturer's system components, such as felt, ice and water shield, and shingles, to get an upgraded warranty on an installation.

While this is a step up from the average materials warranty and an improvement over the roof being installed by someone with little or no expertise, it's not perfect. You may still be left with a large bill if you ever need to make a claim on the warranty, especially if the contractor also used materials from a different company.

You may even find that the contractor has done other things that disqualify your warranty claim, such as installing improper insulation and ventilation in the attic. This kind of simple certification doesn't always mean that much.

To protect your home and your investment in it, it's worth hiring a contractor who has gone through the more advanced certification process and earned a factory's best accreditation. Penn Ohio Roofing is proud to say that we've earned and maintained some of the top certifications in the industry.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is the IKO Pro4 roof system?
    A:

The IKO Pro4 roof system combines four roofing products:

    • GoldShield, ArmourGard, and StormShield eave protection defend your roof against wind-driven rain and ice dams. IKO recommends eave protection in valleys and around protrusions like vents and skylights.
    • RoofGard-Cool Grey or Stormtite synthetic underlayment options are chosen based on the local climate.
    • Leading Edge Plus starter strips are installed at eaves and rakes as an extra line of defense where it’s needed most.
    • Three ridge cap shingle options give us choices for matching the profile of the shingle.

Unlike most other brands, IKO does not require that we use their underlayment or do a full tear-off of the old roof to get the better warranty.

  • Where do I get the Golden Pledge Warranty and how much does it cost?
    A:

As a GAF Master Elite Contractor, Penn Ohio Roofing is able to provide the Golden Pledge Warranty on your residential roofing project.

Every roof is different and requires its own price quote, but in general, our top-of-the-line roof with premium materials runs 10-12% higher than a baseline roof.

However, considering that a warranty claim on that baseline roof may force you to pay for up to 55% of that roof again, the investment in a better product at the start is a wise one.

  • How much could I be liable for if my roof fails under warranty?
    A:

The lists below show the differences between the warranties that contractors can offer. They're all considered 100% coverage within the non-prorated warranty period, but as you can see, their coverage varies.

    Standard Uncertified Contractor

    • 10-yr. non-prorated/lifetime total shingle only warranty
    • Shingles – Covered!
    • Felt underlayment – NOT covered
    • Ice and water shield – NOT covered
    • Starter strips – NOT covered
    • Ridge vent and cap – NOT covered
    • Tear-off – NOT covered
    • Tear-off disposal – NOT covered
    • Total homeowner liability: Approximately 55% of the roof cost

    Typical Certified Contractor

    • 10-50-yr. non-prorated/lifetime total warranty (varies by mfr.)
    • Shingles – Covered!
    • Felt underlayment – NOT covered
    • Ice and water shield – Covered!
    • Starter strips – Covered!
    • Ridge vent and cap – Covered!
    • Tear-off – Covered!
    • Tear Off Disposal – NOT covered
    • Total homeowner liability: Approximately 20% of the roof cost

GAF Master Elite Golden Pledge Warranty

    • 50-yr. non-prorated/lifetime total warranty plus 25-year workmanship warranty
    • Shingles – Covered!
    • Felt underlayment – Covered!
    • Ice and water shield – Covered!
    • Starter strips – Covered!
    • Ridge vent and cap – Covered!
    • Tear-off – Covered!
    • Tear-off disposal -Covered!
    • Total liability: Approximately 0% of the roof cost

  • Is the Golden Pledge Warranty an extended warranty?
    A:

    Technically speaking, it's a factory-certified roof installation.

An extended warranty generally covers a product longer or for a broader range of problems. For example, an extended warranty on a TV might give you another few years.

But what if your TV fails because it was plugged into a surge protector that wasn't covered by the warranty? Most likely, the warranty won't cover that.

Our Golden Pledge Warranty is like your TV's warranty provider that came to your home, checked the electrical system, and certified the entire system. Then, when the TV fails, it'd be covered.
